RADIO COMMUNICATIONS AT SEA-SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE NEXT DECADE

It is a commonly held view that the introduction of maritime satellite communication will have a great impact on the shipping industry. However, the existing communication systems will for obvious reasons still for many years play an important role. The paper reviews reasons for fitting radio equipment onboard ships, sums up communication methods and points out obvious limitations of actual communication systems (coverage, reliability, traffic cost etc.). To achieve optimum and expected performance, it is the author's view that the systems will have to compliment each other, and he advocates an over-all onboard communication system design. Important questions associated with this concept are how the conventional radio station should be designed in the "satellite age". Attention will be drawn to: Operational features; Signal processing; Planning and installation.
