DEPLOYING THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMUNICATION FOR ITS PROTOCOLS (NTCIP) : PROVING THE CONCEPT WORKS

One of the most exciting developments in the ITS industry, one that holds so much promise for the future, is the widespread deployment of the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocols, or NTCIP. NTCIP will help lead the way to achieve a cost-effective deployment and the management of the ITS applications. It will also influence the design and the manufacturing process, and may cause changes in the way system integrators do their work. This paper will not only provide a brief description of the NTCIP development, but also talks about the VMS Operational test conducted by the I-95 Corridor Coalition, to demonstrate that the protocol works in a real- world setting. In summary, the project will utilize NTCIP to enable the control and monitor of variable message signs (VMSs) from different vendors. The central management station will deploy a subset of standardized functions designed for the VMS-specific NTCIP objects. The definitions will allow the basic control and monitor of one or more field devices and creating messages, checking the status of messages, and identifying the manufacturer of the VMS software and hardware. In addition the Coalition is likely to link to its Information Exchange Network (IEN) currently functioning at over forty agencies in the Corridor to exchange real-time transportation information
