PROMOTING RURAL ITS SOLUTION

This paper describes the Rural Outreach, or "Simple Solutions" project, recently performed for the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The goal of the project was to identify and describe proven, cost effective solutions for rural transportation- related problems or needs. The definition used during the project for these "simple solutions" was that an application need not be currently considered an intelligent transportation system (ITS) as such, but that it should represent a technology-based, effective, practical solution for an existing or impending problem. This paper describes the approach utilized in the study, and describes some of the findings. In the process of presenting the findings, this paper suggests a series of rural infrastructures and indicates how these simple solutions fit into each infrastructure. This paper also presents planned activities for promoting these solutions to local level transportation professionals and spreading the word about potential applications of technology within the rural transportation environment
