ANALYSIS OF THE ITS TELECOMMUNICATIONS MARKET
This paper stems from research conducted at the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center regarding the state-of-the-practice in public sector planning and acquisition of fixed point-to-point (wireline) ITS telecommunications capabilities. It examines the potential market for public sector acquisition of ITS wireline and wireless capacity in the context of the varied market services provided by private sector telecommunications service firms. The paper estimates public sector investment needs for ITS telecommunications, and stratifies private sector telecommunications providers and their motivations relative to those needs as well as other market opportunities in the recently deregulated marketplace. The paper also characterizes the prospective ITS telecommunications marketplace by: the potential for growth and revenue generation, the effect of deployment timing on market size and growth, and the firms most likely to be involved in ITS, and discusses how other market opportunities may divert interest and investment from the ITS telecommunications market
