THE TRAVEL AND URBAN FORM IMPLICATIONS OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
This paper looks at the impact of telecommunications technology on travel and urban form. Three potential impacts are identified: by substituting for travel, by stimulating new travel, and by making more efficient or rearranging travel. The author contends that all of these three types of effects could then have an impact on urban form. The author also points out that telecommunications will lead to increased decentralization, thus creating greater urban sprawl. Several points are discussed regarding that view, partly supporting and partly moderating it.
