This special seminar followed the final meeting of the 17th U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics. It was attended by over one hundred people and the group was comprised of engineers and scientists from industry, government, and universities and included experts in rock mechanics, mining, excavation, drilling, tunneling and use of underground space. The purpose of the seminar was to present the latest thinking on a wide variety of rock fragmentation schemes and to discuss their relative merits. A survey of the various techniques for rock disintegration was presented which emphasized novel techniques. Thirteen speakers presented brief summaries of their recent research results or views on this subject.
