ROCK FRAGMENTATION: A REPORT OF A SPECIAL SEMINAR HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH U.S. SYMPOSIUM ON ROCK MECHANICS (17TH) HELD IN SNOWBIRD, UTAH ON AUGUST 27, 1976
This special seminar followed the final meeting of the 17th U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics. It was attended by over one hundred people and the group was comprised of engineers and scientists from industry, government, and universities and included experts in rock mechanics, mining, excavation, drilling, tunneling and use of underground space. The purpose of the seminar was to present the latest thinking on a wide variety of rock fragmentation schemes and to discuss their relative merits. A survey of the various techniques for rock disintegration was presented which emphasized novel techniques. Thirteen speakers presented brief summaries of their recent research results or views on this subject. Each of the participants was asked to complete a questionnaire, ranking the potential of the various novel fracture techniques. A summary of the information gathered from the questionnaires is presented in this report, as well as brief summaries of the attendees' presentations.
