RISK ASSESSMENT: NAVIGATION AIDS FOR SHIPPING IN CANSO STRAIT
This report summarizes the methodology and findings related to the development and testing of the prototype Marine Navigation Safety System through the modification of the Tanker Navigation Safety System (TNSS). A case risk analysis study of tanker transportation in the Strait of Canso, Nova Scotia, was conducted using the prototype and its companion navigation safety estimation tool. The risk analysis compared the status quo risk in the strait to several other mitigation measure combinations, including the use of the Differential Global Positioning System, the Electronic Chart Display and Information System, and the phasing out of redundant and floating aids to navigation. The report includes a user manual for the Marine Navigation Safety System, implemented for Windows 95.
