DESIGNED AND DETAILED (BS 8110:1997)
The purpose of this report is to apply the principles of limit state design given in British Standard BS 8110 by means of a simple worked example for a reinforced concrete building frame. It presents the calculations and details in a form suitable for design office purposes. Limit state design realises that a structure may become unsatisfactory in several ways, each of which must be considered independently against defined limits of satisfactory behaviour. By providing sufficient margins of safety, it aims to provide an acceptably high probability that the structure will perform well during its intended life. Limit states may be classified into the ultimate limit state, to provide absolute safety, and the serviceability limit states for deflection and cracking, concerned with durability. For testing materials, materials properties, such as strength, are usually assumed to be normally distributed. A characteristic strength is chosen below which at most 5% of the test results lie; it is multiplied by a partial safety factor for the material strength to obtain the design strength. For the worked example, charts are given for the design information, structural summary, floor slab, first-floor main beam, edge beam, columns, foundaiton, shear wall, staircase, and column design.
