HUMAN FACTORS CONSIDERATIONS IN AIRCRAFT CABIN DESIGN. IN: HANDBOOK OF AVIATION HUMAN FACTORS
Human factors specialists and others often hear a question relating to the uncomfortable airplane seats. This paper reviews the many considerations that are applied to the design of an entire aircraft cabin. The design requirements usually include a wide range of frequently competing aspects, only some of which involve human factors considerations. Manufacturing costs, operating economics, safety, available technology, producibility, regulations, and maintainability are a few of the key considerations in the design process. As specialist in each of those fields consider theirs the most important, it is the job of human factors specialists to serve as advocates for all users, to ensure that all their needs are met.
