PURDUE INSTITUTE STUDIES HIGHWAYS
A new institute that merges civil and mechanical engineering in an effort to make the nation's highways quieter and more durable was dedicated at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Institute of Safe, Quiet, and Durable Highways brings together civil engineers, who are experts on roads and paving, and mechanical engineers who specialize in tire design, automobiles, acoustics, and vibration control. The goal is to better understand how noise is created as tires roll across pavement and use that knowledge to develop new paving mixtures, road construction techniques, and tire designs to reduce road noise.
