RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MOSCOW RING ROAD, RUSSIA
The 109km Ring Road project is one of the largest and most complex highway projects ever undertaken in Moscow. The reconstruction of the Ring Road motorway began in 1995 and was completed in September 1998. This paper describes the design and construction of the bridges on the Ring Road, which were a significant part of the project. The Ring Road has 49 road bridges over other roads (17 on the line of the motorway and 32 over it), 12 road bridges over railways, 8 road bridges over rivers, 2 railway bridges across the motorway, 41 pedestrian bridges, and 12 pedestrian tunnels. The bridges were designed according to Russian Bridge Code 2.05.03-84. Additional requirements were set by the Moscow City Government and, in 1997, a regional document was drafted introducing new requirements for the design of bridges in Moscow. Steel, composite, and reinforced concrete bridges were built without interrupting traffic flow. The paper discusses the concept, design details, and construction of the railway bridges and road bridges. It considers especially three of the largest bridges on the Ring Road: (1) the bridges over the River Moskva near the villages of Spas and Besedy, with respective lengths of 239m and 322m; and (2) the bridge over the Moskva Canal near the city of Khimki. Pedestrian bridges are described briefly.
