THE BERLIN RAILWAY HUB: RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT WORK IN THE GERMAN CAPITAL

This article describes the extensive work being done to make Berlin an efficient European railway hub; it includes a route map. The railway network in Berlin is not only being repaired and upgraded; during recent years, enormous efforts have been made to bring the lines into Berlin up to high technical standards. 17 billion DEM have been invested in building the new Berlin-Hanover high-speed line and improving the Berlin-Hamburg and Berlin-Dresden lines. By 2010, Berlin is expecting over 50M main line and 85M regional passengers. Rail transport services will be extended systematically by developing infrastructure. For local traffic, a demand of about 1160M trips per year is expected on Berlin's underground railway, buses, and trams. Berlin's future main line railway network is based on the 'mushroom' concept, that the resulting inner city main line network will be shaped like a mushroom. About 10 billion DEM are being invested in this programme, whose projects include: (1) the north Berlin inner ring, the 'cap' of the mushroom, on which 78km of main line track is being rebuilt; (2) the 9km long S-Bahn line, the 'rim'; and (3) the 9km long north-south main line, including a 3.5km long tunnel, the 'stem'. The article describes work on these lines and their stations in some detail.
