COMPARISON OF VARIOUS TECHNIQUES FOLLOWED IN RESURFACING OF DEFENCE RUNWAYS IN INDIA

This paper presents a study of various aspects of resurfacing the runways of defence airfields in India. Its objective was to understand the problems faced, and investigate possible corrective measures to be used in future works. It discusses the following topics: (1) permanent ramps at three types of filler runway junction; (2) temporary ramps; (3) the type of filler to be used in the runways' asphaltic concrete; (4) the lowering of the water table; (5) refilling the sealing compound in expansion joints where overlay is to be laid; (6) repair of cracks in existing rigid overlays; (7) demolition and relaying of faulty slabs; (8) selection of type of rigid overlay; (9) use of antistripping compound; (10) reguarding of shoulders; (11) type of rollers to be used for compaction; (12) equipment for removing temporary ramps; (13) equipment for roughening concrete surfaces before their rigid overlay; (14) use of hot mix plants; (15) use of weigh batchers; (16) use of pavers; and (17) the lessons learned from the project. The lessons can be applied to improve the supply of materials and spare parts for machines, together with the testing of samples, mix design, etc., and the advance identification and scheduling of agencies.
