ADVANCED FARE COLLECTION AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTION SMART CARD PAYMENT SYSTEMS
A regional multiple agencies transportation payments environment can leverage the emerging financial institution stored value smart card open payment systems. Smart card based advanced fare collection for transit has become increasingly prominent over the past few years. Recently, there have been important parallel developments, for multiple agency regional fare coordination and for financial institution development. Advances in enabling technologies and in public private partnerships are supporting opportunities for new levels of collaboration which can enhance the value proposition for all of the participants involved. This paper addresses: general background on concepts, enabling technologies and representative initiatives, for the use of stored value payment systems in public transit and by financial institutions; a concept for linking multiple agency advanced fare collection with financial institution open stored value payment systems, including benefits, shared infrastructure opportunities and challenges.
