CONCRETE TIE REPLACEMENT
The Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority's (MARTA's) rail system operates over 100 miles (1609 km) of mainline track and services 36 rail stations. Beginning in 1991, MARTA's track inspectors began reporting isolated concrete crossite failures. Reported tie deterioration continued until 1996 when MARTA made the decision to replace approximately 52,500 concrete crossties. The MARTA team recognized the severe service disruption created by this work and the requirement to involve all areas of the organization in an effort to minimize customer impact. Major steps in this effort are presented in this paper.
