ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT SITUATION OF GREEN WAVES IN MUNICH

In the past few decades, the department of district administration (Kreisverwaltungsrat) of the City of Munich has implemented many green waves within the road network. In autumn 1995, the consulting engineer's office was engaged in analyzing 29 sections with more than 250 traffic signal control systems and an overall length of about 90 km regarding the improvement of the green waves. The objective of the investigation was to determine the improvement potentials in an actual-nominal-comparison in the course of the changes of the existing green waves and the traffic signal controls. The primary objectives for optimizing the green waves are: minimizing the number of stops and maximizing the flow in private vehicle traffic; limitation of ecological damage (exhaust emissions); reduction of energy consumption (fuel consumption); decrease in travel time in private vehicle traffic through adjusting the signal programs in accordance with the demands of traffic that differ by time of day; and permanent platoon control to avoid speeding offenses.
