HIGH-FLYING TECHNOLOGY

This article describes a number of safety devices introduced by Energy Absorption Systems, the world's largest manufacturer of crash cushions and related highway safety products. The EASI-STOP Truck Arrestor System uses 'water twister' technology to stop the movement of loaded trucks. The system consists of a catch-net fixed to nylon straps wrapped around spools fitted to the shafts of two water twister units, one at each side of the road. When a vehicle hits the net, the strapping unrells, causing the blades inside the water-filled barriers to turn. This provides resistance which increases as the outside force increases.
