THE MESSAGES OF FOLK ARCHITECTURE

This paper focuses on sustainable development and folk architecture in Croatia. On its space and time framework, folk architecture reflects and expresses entire conceptual and emotional capabilities of human society. It is defined by two groups of factors: natural conditions and social implications. The first group includes the geological texture of soil, terrain configuration, climate, vegetation, and available building material. The second group encompasses historical events, migrations, levels of welfare, and ethnic characteristics of the population, organization of the family, and the social group. Forced urbanization and industrialization after the Second World War brought neglect of agriculture, causing further dissolution of rural regions and their social structure and degradation of traditional lifestyles and economy, thus causing damage to the rural landscape. The paper maintains that while physical conditions of the environment are endangered to a considerable extent, the struggle for survival should be accompanied by devotion to the community elevating the living space on a creatively higher level, fighting against automatism, technicism, and capitulation to practice.
