I-15 BRIDGES USED FOR STRUCTURAL STUDIES
Highway bridges idled and waiting demolition in the Interstate 15 (I-15) reconstruction in Utah are being used as large-scale lab equipment by structural engineers. More than 30 bridges are being torn down and replaced. One bridge that was part of the I-15/I-215 interchange is being shaken by researchers, who are measuring the structure's reactions to the stress. The goal of this particular series of tests is to determine whether various shaking techniques can tell if a bridge has structural damage and then pinpoint the location of that damage.
