SANTA MONICA TOPS NATION'S URBAN TRANSIT SYSTEMS STUDY
For the second year in a row, Santa Monica, California, topped the list in the sixth annual ranking of 137 urban transit systems by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The study reviews transit service levels, operating costs, fares, subsidies, and ridership rates for the nation's largest systems. The most improved transit system is Columbia, South Carolina, which jumped 93 places to 22. The study also suggests that overall national public transit is showing some signs of slowing its long-term decline.
