REVIEW OF AUTOMATED ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMS IN THE WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA
Automated enforcement (AE) programs have gained popularity in the United States in recent years. However, there are still many uncertainties regarding their implementation. Over the past 2 years, members of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Technical Committee 96-5 reviewed both continuing and now-defunct AE programs and compiled the findings into an information report. In addition, an in-depth survey of AE programs in the Washington, D.C. area was conducted. With five operational AE programs focusing on a wide range of traffic violation types; a mix of state, county, and local governments plus a federal district pursuing AE programs; and several federally funded field tests of new AE technologies being conducted, the Washington, D.C. area provides an ideal location for a case study on AE. This paper presents the results of the survey to provide answers to questions critical to a program's success.
