TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH GOALS AND PRIORITIES FOR ASME: A PRELIMINARY REPORT

The scope of transportation research pertinent to the Society and its members is discussed, and policy gudielines for ASME are suggested which include: greater involvement in the systems aspects of transportation, provision for bringing the expert advice of ASME members to bear on the formulation of national policy, stimulation of research to formulation of national policy, stimulation of research to develop a broad knowledge base and improved technical expertise in transportation, as well as continuing the traditional roles of providing forums and publications for the exchange and dissemination of technical information. Among the high priority research areas which the Task Force suggests that ASMF endorse and stimulate are: efficiency of energy conversion to transportation; mechanical reliability, inspection, and maintenance; shock and vibration efficts including crash energy management; human biomechanics; vehicle and system control, surveillance, and management; transportation noise; and pipeline technology.
