PROGRAM FOR ROAD INFORMATICS: THEME DYNAMIC SPEED ADJUSTMENT: ELECTRONIC "SPEED CHECKERS" IN UMEAA - FINAL REPORT

PROGRAM FOER VAEGINFORMATIK: TEMA DYNAMISK HASTIGHETSANPASSNING: ELEKTRONISKA "FARTKOLLARE" I UMEAA: SLUTRAPPORT

100 car owners tested a piece of equipment for dynamic speed adjustment - the speed checker. This small device is mounted on the dashboard and signals by light and sound if the driver exceeds the prevailing speed limit. The device was activated in connections with schools. The main objective was to investigate user acceptance of dynamic speed adjustment, not technical development. However, the equipment was found to work very well. The drivers, represented by both private and professional drivers, were interviewed on: traffic safety, different measures for increasing safety; and how they perceived the speed checker. Interviews were made before and after three months usage. The subjects were in general pleased with the speed checker, but the results were varied. 4 of 5 respondents want the device as a support and not as a police surveillance instrument. A vast majority of the participants wanted to keep their speed checkers and continue the project. Trials will therefore continue until summer 1997, which will ensure more stable results.
