NOISE BARRIERS - 'A NEW DIMENSION'

This article examines efforts to make noise barrier walls that are attractive as well as functional. Noise walls, hard and vertical, less than 250 mm thick and often up to 6.1 meters high, have a dual effect. They reflect sound back towards a highway, thus preventing it from reaching nearby residences, and studies have shown there is a visual perception of sound (seeing the source of the noise can be almost as distracting as hearing it).
