THE ROAD TO LOWER COSTS
In the asphalt industry, there has been a move toward the use of road recycling that combines the longevity of total replacement with the cost value of road patching. There are two forms -- hot and cold. Cold planing is generally used to remove the surface aggregate and binder down to sub-base level. The planed material often contains a high degree of potentially re-usable material. In hot plant recycling, RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement) consisting of clean aggregates and aged bituminous (asphaltic) binder are crushed and broken down to produce high quality asphaltic concrete, the performance of which has been proven to equal that of conventional mixes.
