DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE FLEXURAL SECTIONS BY UNIFIED DESIGN APPROACH. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE
Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by J.A. Munshi, published in this journal (Volume 95, Number 5, September-October 1998), are presented. The first discusser recommends an alternative method for calculating the upper limit for reinforcement ratio of flexural sections. The second discusser agrees that the differences between the unified design approach and the current 3/4 rho balanced approach are explained very clearly by the author. However, he maintains that the similarity between the two approaches should be emphasized, lest those unfamiliar with them might ignore the clarity and logic offered by current practice when applied to both reliable strength and ductility. Discussion is followed by closure from the author.
