INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TUNNEL CONTROL AND INSTRUMENTATION AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS FOR TUNNELS, HONG KONG, 8-9 FEBRUARY 1999

This article summarises the conference. In his opening speech, R Footman, the Hong Kong Commissioner for Transport reviewed Hong Kong's current transport network achievements, and outlined the future projects being planned to improve and extend its transport infrastructure. He drew attention to the growing emphasis on related environmental issues, and mentioned the stronger legislative controls of air quality inside tunnels. Many of the conference papers presented details of innovative applications of technology to the operation, management, and control of tunnels in Hong Kong. In particular, the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTR) of Hong Kong showed how it is using technology to improve their performance and efficiency, and showed its commitment to providing top-quality customer service. Other papers covered some of Hong Kong's impressive engineering achievements, including the Lantau Link to the new Chek Lap Kok Airport and MTR's control centre at Tsing Yi. The conference demonstrated the specialist areas which tunnel designers, operators, and maintainers need to understand, to obtain optimal safety, efficiency, and service quality throughout the life of a tunnel. Several papers covered human factors and customer-related issues. Communication systems were also emphasised.
