A METHOD OF PREDICTING HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY AND WATER DIFFUSIVITY FOR PAVEMENT SUBGRADE SOILS

A method of predicting the hydraulic conductivities and soil-water diffusivities of pavement subgrade soils is discussed. The method utilizes the soil moisture content-suction head relation, H (theta), to calculate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil. The value of the hydraulic conductivity at saturation, K sub s (the soil permeability), is used as a matching factor during the calculations. The H(theta) relations and the saturated conductivities, K sub s, of the soils were determined in the laboratory using the commercially available "Tempe" cell. Disturbed and undisturbed samples of Drummer, Fayette-C, Ottawa sand, and Class X concrete sand subgrade soils were used in this study. From the comparison between the experimental and calculated values, it can be concluded that the method successfully predicts the hydraulic conductivities of pavement subgrade soils.
