LTT 10 YEARS 1989-99
This special feature celebrates the tenth anniversary of the first issue of Local Transport Today. It begins with a review of the major events in transport during the last decade, then includes comments by some leading transport professionals on some of the key issues. Under the guidance of seven different Secretaries of State, 'new' official transport thinking has developed over the last ten years, resulting eventually in the UK Government's integrated transport White Paper. The change from the previous programme of very extensive road building was partly stimulated by the 1994 SACTRA Report, which concluded that new roads could generate additional traffic, and a 1998 report which noted that road capacity reductions could reduce the total traffic on a road network. There have been significant changes in UK public transport policy, including the privatisation of British Rail. Transport policy has also become more integrated with policies in other sectors, especially environment, but also increasingly health and education. The feature includes articles by transport experts which discuss: (1) road traffic policy; (2) transport modelling; (3) land use and transport; (4) passenger transport; (5) transport funding; (6) traffic management and road safety, especially for pedestrians and cyclists; and (7) managing traffic demand.
