THE USE OF FLEXOWALL ELEVATING--CONVEYING SYSTEMS IN SELF UNLOADER VESSELS

A Flexowall conveyor is a special flat belt conveyor to which pleated flexible side walls are vulcanised to increase the carrying capacity. The belt and sidewall are manufactured by Conrad Scholtz A.G. in Germany for assembly in the United States. The basic sidewall sizes are 80 mm, 120 mm, 200 mm, and 400 mm. The Flexowall system is available in a number of configurations of which the main types are the "L", "I" and "C" elevator systems. The paper discusses the features and present limitations of the system and gives some examples of direct application of the three system types to a cargo ship. Also described is the fitting of an added midbody section and the replacement of a chain elevator by an "I" Flexowall blet elevator. The paper concludes with a proposal for a 1,000 foot "C" elevator capable of a 10,000 tons/hr unloading rate.
