ADVANCES IN WINTER MAINTENANCE

Winter maintenance operations are carried out on Surrey's highways to ensure the safety of road users, maintain traffic movement and generally to keep the economy moving. Crushed dry rock salt is the natural raw material used to combat ice formation. The spreading of dry salt by purpose-built vehicles (gritters) is the traditional method used in Surrey and the rest of the United Kingdom. The paper reviews a pilot study carried out in the Farnham area to introduce a new pre-wetted salt technique where fine-graded high-purity dry salt was pre-wetted with a brine solution prior to spreading. This approach, though new in the UK, has been common on the mainland of Europe for many years. There it has proved, as indeed it did in the pilot study, to deliver environmental, operational and economic benefits. (A)
