This subject is discussed with particular reference to (a) propulsion Diesel engines; (b) rigidly installed engines; (c) resiliently mounted engines; (d) auxiliary Diesel engines; (e) reduction gearing; (f) lubrication pumps; (g) exhaust systems; and (h) other sources. It is concluded that in rigidly installed Diesel propulsion and auxiliary engines, fair agreement exists between the equivalent velocity level and the velocity level measured in the vertical direction. The equivalent velocity level of two inner main Diesel engines of a four-engine plant, appears to be 10-15 dB lower than the equivalent velocity level of the four engines. The equivalent velocity level of resiliently-mounted Diesel alternators shows good agreement with velocity level in the vertical direction. It is noted that installation of Diesel alternators close to the hull increases equivalent velocity level by 10 dB or more.
