THE NORTH SEA ROUTE AS AN INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT LINK
The development of the Russian North Sea Route (NSR) strategy up to now was mostly oriented towards heavy production needs. But now the approach to the development of the Arctic region should be gradually altered. This different type of development makes certain demands to the transport systems and especially to introducing the intermodal ones. The NSR which cuts the transportation time span would offer great advantages for relatively high-value commodities. Since 1990 the NSR is virtually fully accessible to international transit traffic. This traffic potential is estimated by the UN at about 20 min.t/a and is certainly underrated. The NSR is the shorter route connecting Europe with East Asia and North America, and additionally there are favourable conditions for Arctic cruise industry.
