CLOGGING STUDY OF GEOTEXTILE WEATHERED MUDSTONE
This paper focuses on the combined use of fly ash and geotextiles as a solution for the typical engineering problem of weathered mudstone slopes encountered in Taiwan. In situ collapsed mustone caused by weathering may be reused as fill materials for the geotextile-reinforced earch retaining structure for the slope problem. In this study, modified type F fly ash (lime added) was used for improving the soil particle size, and eight nonwoven specimens were used to evaluate the permeability and filtration properties with fly ash stablized soils by the gradient ratio test. Since the modified studies, only 2:1 and 6:1 of fly ash to lime ratio by weight and the proper modified fly ash contents were controlled, and the mixture was cured at 38 degrees for 7 days for the gradient ratio test. The results showed that all geotextile specimens were clogged with natural soil, and the gradient ratio reached a value greater than the maximum value of 3 suggested by the Corps of Engineers. For stabilized soil, most of them met the requirement of GR>3. The flow rate of the soil-geotextile system through the gradient ratio test was also measured and showed the same behavior as the GR value did. The related properties of geotextiles were also evaluated and correlated to the results from gradient ratio testing. Findings have indicated that the porosity of nonwoven geotextiles may relate to the performance in drainage and filtration. From the results of this study, fly ash-stabilized finegrained soil may be used as fill materials in geotextile-reinforced each systems, based on the drainage-filtration point of view.
