PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: MAJOR IMPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY-TRANSFER
Over the past decades tremendous efforts have been made to ameliorate living conditions in less developed countries (LDCs). Based on the picture emerging from these countries, it would appear the efforts have been woefully unsuccessful. There is now a need to reexamine the strategies that have thus far been employed in efforts addressed to improving the quality of life in LDCs. Development efforts in LDCs have typically relied on materials and techniques originating in advanced industrialized countries. The implications of this, or what is commonly known as north-south technology-transfer (hereafter, TT) for the recipient country are not fully understood. In this paper, the author examines some major implications of TT in the public transportation sector of developing countries.
