PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY RELATIONSHIPS: A SYNOPSIS OF A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION
This exploratory study investigates productivity and quality relationships in the airline industry. A major finding is that increased network density has a greater favorable impact on transportation quality and costs than does capacity utilization. Additionally, transportation productivity should not be confused with input efficiency. Both can be traded off against each other since higher input costs can rsult in lower output costs and better output quality. Implications for transportation policy and managerial practice are discussed.
