NECK INJURIES AND REAR-END CRASHES: SPECIAL ISSUE
Research has indicated that head restraints could prevent whiplash injuries in rear-end crashes, but so far the existing head restraints do not satisfactorily prevent whiplash injuries. This special issue of 'Status Report' first provides a snapshot history of head restraints, determines that better ones are needed, and recognizes the new designs created for Volvo and Saab do go beyond simple geometric improvements but incorporate the vehicle seatback into a more complete restraint system. The issue also points out that understanding the fundamentals of whiplash injuries points toward more effective prevention strategies. A new crash test dummy and injury criterion are also allowing more sophisticated assessments of seatback/head restraint performance. Provided are ratings for 1999 passenger cars, pickups, and utility vehicles.
