SALT LAKE CITY, 2002 AND BEYOND

Salt Lake City is enjoying a phenomenal population growth and as a result of that, is in need of innovative, efficient solutions to common urban concerns. The primary transportation facilities of this geographically defined, long, linear population pattern were constructed in the 1950s. Traffic congesion, environmental quality requirements and public transit economic factors led to the choice of a light rail trsnsit (LRT) system along the most widely traveled transit corridor in the valley as part of the locally preferred alternative package of highway and transit improvements. The paper reviews the status of the project.
