PUBLIC SAFETY IN TRANSPORTATION: PREPARING FOR TOMORROW
For years, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Police Department functioned with a manual dispatch system and a limited, automated records management system. With the growth of the department, the ongoing trend toward faster, more capable and mission critical application became apparent. The records management system supported very little reporting capability, while the dispatch system had none. This paper discusses the process of deciding what was needed, the RFP, and the system acquired. The system consists of applications software, systems software and hardware. The Police Management Information system (PMIS) established an interactive support environment which allows the MARTA Police Department to improve employee productivity and increase service/reliability to both our internal and external customers.
