INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS: THE ROLE OF ARCHITECTURE
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are the information age applied to transportation. The National ITS Architecture organizes the basic operations and information that may be useful in a comprehensive ITS. Work is underway in two areas to enhance the architecture: emergency management services and data archiving. Many regional agencies are already using the National ITS Architecture to develop their own approach. Positioning this country's transportation investments today to support data exchange, new applications, and the increasing need for more information shows foresight and wisdom.
