1976 REPORT AND POLICY FOR PROTECTION OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS
To provide extended service life for new concrete bridge decks, a policy has been developed in which bridges are grouped into categories, with those structures carrying the heaviest traffic volumes and receiving the greatest amount of chemical application falling into the higher categories. For decks in category I (high traffic volumes and heavy application of de-icers), the recommended protective system includes a special concrete overlay and the resulting 2-course construction to resolve problems of subsidence of concrete reinforcing bars, cracks over reinforcing bars and obtaining specificed cover over the reinforcing bars. Recommendations are also made for 3 more classes: moderate traffic and application of deicers; low traffic and chemical application; and systems other than interstate and truck highway. The policy for restoration by contract is set forth, as well as the policy for maintenance by the maintenance forces of the highway department.
