SHIFTS IN PETROLEUM TRANSPORTATION
Pipeline transportation of crude petroleum and petroleum products in 1973 totaled 47.44% of the 1.9 billion net tons transported domestically. This represents a 4.10% increase over 1973. In ton-mileage pipelines transported 60.29% of the 840.9 billion ton-miles, compared to 35.5% by water, 2.9% by truck, and 1.44% by rail carriers. Tables show the shift in transportation modes since 1938, with an increase for pipelines and motor carriers and a decrease for water and rail carriers.
