ON THE RIGHT PATH?

The UK Government's integrated transport White Paper strongly encourages cycling and walking as a transport mode. This new emphasis has important implications for the training of engineers and other professionals who will be needed to provide the necessary infrastructure. In Summer 1998, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) set up the Joint Cycling/Walking Group on Professional Training and Information, to review existing information and recommend changes. It will (1) assess the training and technical information needs of professionals providing for cyclists and pedestrians; (2) consider including cycling and walking within development and planning processes; (3) review the promotion of cycling and walking issues; (4) propose actions to improve the range and quality of professional training; and (5) identify any significant gaps in the flow of technical and professional knowledge. This article also outlines some other cycling and walking initiatives.
