CURRENT ISSUES IN TRAVEL AND TRANSPORT DEMAND SURVEYS

This paper presents some of the authors' personal views on what they consider to be the main issues in current transport survey methodology. It was stimulated by discussions before, during, and after the fourth International Conference on Survey Methods in Transport (ICSMIT). The authors suggest two major motivations for conducting travel and transport demand surveys. System operators need usage and user profile information as inputs to their strategic and tactical management decisions. More detailed input is required to analyses intended to improve our ability to understand or predict behaviour. Most of this paper is devoted to the following themes: (1) achieving quality and efficiency in travel and transport demand surveys; (2) non-response problems; (3) the use of hypothetical choice data; (4) the increasing role of new technologies in data acquisition; (5) seeking to understand travel behaviour; and (6) new contexts for travel and transport demand surveys. Summaries are given of relevant issues in quality, efficiency, non-response, hypothetical choices, use of new technologies, and understanding travel behaviour. Five examples are mentioned of new contexts for travel and transport demand surveys that are continually emerging. For the covering abstract, see IRRD E101013.
