LNG TANKER TEROTECHNOLOGY AS APPLIED TO DESIGN, MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION; POINTS ON PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS

Terotechnology is a combination of technological management, financial, operating, and maintenance practices applied to physical assests in pursuit of economic life-cycle costs. It involves the specification, design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and modification of such physical assets as interrelated practices necessitating feedback of information on performance and costs at all stages. The UK Department of Industry has a Committee for Terotechnology and the National Terotechnology Centre opened in 1975 with the object of fostering this new concept as an aid to British industry. The U.S. equivalent is Logistic engineering. The LNG tanker industry is very capital-intensive and would benefit from an immediate injection of terotechnological practices. The emphasis in LNG tanker design and construction techniques is generally concentrated on minimizing the procurement cost. Reducing maintenance costs and increasing days in service continue to be almost ignored. The various costs involved in tanker operation are therefore reviewed and discussed in this article.
