BUREAU VERITAS AND GAS CARRIERS. 2. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Taking into account the structural complexity of gas carriers and the catastrophic consequences a very slight failure many produce, it is vital to have not only a very thorough knowledge of the loads, but a good understanding of the structural behaviour of this type of ship. For this purpose the stresses in all parts of the structure must be calculated, as well as taking a careful look at the technology of construction (material, connections, welding). The optimization that owners and builders try to obtain leads to different structures from one ship to another, where the stresses are very close to the permissible limits. The calculations and checks that Bureau Veritas have to carry out on every carrier classed on its register for this reason are enumerated with brief comments.
