AIRPORT MANAGERS RESPOND TO CHALLENGES WITH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The article examines the ways that airport operations could benefit by using integrated, enterprise wide information technology (IT) systems. One of the specific systems described is common use terminal equipment (CUTE) that can help airports maximize gate space by letting multiple airlines share the same computer system at individual gates. Other benefits of CUTE and other integrated technologies include: flight data will be more accurate and up to date; cost savings for airlines by not being forced to lease gates they do not regularly use; improved baggage retrieval through sharing carousels based on need; and greater access to crowded airports by start-up airlines through shared use of gates.
