COLD REGIONS IMPACT ON CIVIL WORKS: PROCEEDINGS OF THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COLD REGIONS ENGINEERING, DULUTH, MN, SEPTEMBER 27-30, 1998

Many aspects of cold regions infrastructure engineering are explored in over 70 papers from authors around the world. In seven of the sections, pavement systems are discussed, including the design of asphalt mixtures, selection of materials, spring weakening of roads, pavement performance, seasonal changes in material properties, and local government case studies. Geotechnical issues are presented in five sections. Here, issues such as permafrost and frost penetration, geosynthetics, frost heave, lightweight fills and soil stability are explored. Environmental engineering and utilities are addressed in sections concerning wastewater treatment, water resources, pollution control, and utility repair and operations. Snow and ice are discussed on theoretical and practical levels in sections addressing mechanics, formation, and river and harbor operations. The design, materials selection and operations of structures are presented in four sections pertaining to building design, operations and construction, and concrete durability. Other interesting topics included are road construction and maintenance, and transportation planning and design. This proceedings should serve as a reference on the state-of-the-art of cold regions engineering.
