TRAVEL TRAINING GUIDE

The goal of this travel training guide was to involve national and local organizations representing the public transit industry and people with disabilities in the development and demonstration of workable approaches to promote access to public transportation for people with disabilities. The first phase of the program involved: production of travel training guide; testing the feasibility of a feeder system from paratransit to fixed route service; and, developing a "modification menu" to ensure that information in the form of bus schedules, maps, and signs was as "user friendly" as possible to people with disabilities. The second phase included the following goals: developing a program for parents, guardians, relatives and staff who work with people with disabilities to break down stereotypes about independent travel and overcome their resistance; and training people with multiple disabilities who use wheelchairs to access main line bus or rail services.
