TACTUAL MAPS: ACCESSIBLE INFORMATION FOR TRANSIT USERS WITH DISABILITIES. FINAL REPORT
The lack of accessible system information creates a significant barrier for individuals who are blind, or visually impaired, or may have some other disability. The primary goal of this project was to develop a replicable model/approach for increasing the quantity and quality of transit information available to and useable by people in these disability groups. The project intended that at least 200 tactual maps describing parts of the New York City Subway system be made available together with 10 training sessions in their use. A public media event was conducted with the help of local transit providers to increase the public awareness about the tactual map products and the travel related needs of individuals who have visual or other types of impairments.
